Essential nutrients. Carbohydrates

All the cells in our body need a constant supply of energy to work properly. This energy can be obtained from proteins, fats or carbohydrates, with these latter being the “preferred”.

As well as being a “convenient” food for our cells, carbohydrates also come accompanied by a series of protective substances such as fibre, vitamins and minerals.

They supply us with energy, yes, but they also perform other important functions:

- They regulate fullness
- They control the production of cholesterol and insulin
- They take part in the manufacture of bile acids
- They activate the function of the intestine, preventing both constipation and diarrhoea.
- They feed beneficial intestinal flora

Carbohydrates are the “fuel” of our cells and therefore should not be lacking in our diet.
